Initial steps

• Call the  Chevra Kadisha  (if you need it). Its intervention occurs before and after death.

• It is essential to record the exact day and time of death, as this data defines the Hebrew date (or Jewish date).

Death Certificate and Medical Certificate

It is essential that a doctor certifies the death at home and issues the Medical Death Certificate , which is the initial and essential document.

• Authorized professionals:  Any physician is legally authorized to issue the certificate: family doctor, emergency personnel, or a doctor at the Health Center.
• Emergency Services Notice:  If no physician is present, call  112  (or local emergency number) to request the presence of medical personnel for certification.

Contact with Community and Funeral Entities

Once the certificate is obtained, funeral and religious services must be coordinated following Jewish tradition:

• Contact the Chevra Kadisha  (Sacred Funeral Society):
  • Contact  your local Chevra Kadisha . They will guide the family and coordinate the next steps.
    • Coordinate with the Specialized Funeral Home:
  • The Chevra Kadisha or the family will contact a funeral home specializing in Jewish burials  (denominational funeral home). This company will be responsible for completing the necessary legal procedures with the Civil Registry and other authorities to obtain a burial permit.
• Inform the Jewish Community:
  • Contact your local Jewish community to determine:
    • The day and time of ritual washing ( Tahara ).
    • The day and time of the burial.
    • The organization of the religious service and the presence of the rabbi.

Required Documentation

To expedite the process with your doctor, funeral home, and the community, please prepare the following documents:

1. Identity Document or Passport  of the Deceased.
2. Identity document or passport  of the family member or person responsible for the procedures.
3. Membership/Medical Insurance Card  of the deceased (if applicable, for the doctor).
4. Membership Card  of the deceased from the Jewish Community (if applicable, for example, from the Jewish Community of Marbella).
5. Proof or Link of Jewish Origin  (For example:  Ketuva , or the contact of a rabbi who knows the family, or any other document that the Community may require).
