Cremation is strictly prohibited in the Jewish religion (Halacha).
Burial of the body is required.
Protocol
Initial steps
Call the Chevra Kadisha (if you need it). Its intervention occurs before and after death.
It is essential to record the exact day and time of death, as this data defines the Hebrew date (or Jewish date).
Here, the protocol will be applied according to the place of death:
Protocol in case of death at home
Following the protocol according to the place of death.
Protocol for Transfer to Israel
Documentation (Post-Certification)
Once the protocol according to the place of death has been completed, the preparation and transfer procedures begin, coordinated by the specialized funeral home and the Chevra Kadisha.
Body Preparation (Rites and Conditioning)
Note: In the Jewish context, traditional embalming is forbidden.
Sanitary Conditioning/Conservation: A conservation procedure necessary for international transfer (may include cleaning and the application of preservatives, according to air freight health regulations).
Preparation for Travel: Placement of the body in a sealed, regulated coffin suitable for air transport.
Prior Rites: The ritual washing (Taharah) and dressing (Takhrikhim) are performed according to Jewish tradition, in the Beit Tahara (House of Purity) before the sealing of the casket.
Essential Documentation for Transfer to Israel
The funeral home must manage the following documentation with the Spanish authorities and the Israeli consulate (or embassy):
a. Death Authorization Documents (Spain)
Medical Certificate of Death (CMD).
License to Bury (Issued by the Civil Registry).
Literal Certificate of Death (Civil Registry).
b. Conditioning and Exit Documents (Health and Forensic)
Certificate/Report of Sanitary Conditioning (Substitutes the “Embalming Certificate” in the Jewish context).
Report of Absence of Risk Diseases (Issued by Foreign Health Authority – Sanidad Exterior).
Authorization for the Body’s Departure (Permit issued by the Spanish health authority).
c. Destination Documents (Israel)
Permit for the Body’s Transfer to Israel (Consular authorization).
Contract for Purchase of Plot in Israel (Certifies the place of burial).
Confirmation of Freight Reservation (Málaga – Tel Aviv or corresponding airport).
Body Collection Organization in Israel (Details of the recipient at the destination airport, often a local Chevra Kadisha).
