Cremation is strictly prohibited in the Jewish religion (Halacha).
Burial of the body is required.

📜 Jewish Protocol in Case of Death:
(Accidental in Public Place / Judicial Investigation)

Initial steps

  • Call the  Chevra Kadisha  (if you need it). Its intervention occurs before and after death.

  • It is essential to record the exact day and time of death, as this data defines the Hebrew date (or Jewish date).

  • ⚖️ Legal Challenges & Judicial Authority

  • This scenario involves the intervention of authorities and potential legal requirements:

    • Intervention of Authorities: The mayor, the police, or the local police will require the transfer of the body to the forensic institute.

    • Judicial Decision: Depending on the circumstances, the judge may request an autopsy for investigative purposes.

    • Final Authority: It will be the judge who ultimately issues the burial permit.

      🚫 Prohibition: Autopsy

Autopsy is strictly forbidden in the Jewish religion (Halakha).

      🚨 Urgent and Immediate Action

When the passing occurs in a public place or is subject to a judicial investigation, autopsy is the standard procedure of the authorities. Therefore:

      • Immediately notify the Chevra Kadisha so that they may urgently intervene with the judicial and forensic authorities (Duty Court and/or Institute of Legal Medicine) and formally oppose the procedure.

Contact with Community and Funeral Entities

Once the Medical Certificate has been obtained, funeral and religious services must be coordinated according to Jewish tradition:

Contact with the Chevra Kadisha (Holy Funeral Society)

  • Contact the Chevra Kadisha in your city.

  • They will be responsible for guiding the family and coordinating the next steps.

Coordinate with the Specialized Funeral Home

  • The Chevra Kadisha or the family will contact a funeral home specializing in Jewish burials (a denominational funeral home).

  • This company will be responsible for carrying out the necessary legal procedures with the Civil Registry and other authorities for the burial license.

Inform the Jewish Community

Contact the Jewish Community in your city to determine:

  • The day and time of the ritual washing (Taharah).

  • The day and time of the burial.

  • The organization of the religious service and the presence of the rabbi.

Required Documentation

To expedite procedures with the doctor, the funeral home, and the Community, prepare the following documents:

  • Identity Document or Passport of the Deceased.

  • Identity Document or Passport of the family member or responsible party managing the procedures.

  • Membership/Health Insurance Card of the deceased (if applicable, for the doctor).

  • Jewish Community Membership Card of the deceased (if applicable).

  • Proof or Link of Jewish Origin (Example: Ketubah, the contact information of a rabbi who knows the family, or any other document that the Community may require).
